If you're creating content but not sure what’s working, what’s flopping, or why your videos aren’t converting to followers - this blog post is your cheat sheet.
At Moon Soldier, we don’t just guess. We track. We test. And we refine. That’s how you grow. And that's exactly how I work in big companies, the numbers mean everything, the why is so important!
So let’s break down a simple, strategic process you can follow to improve your TikTok videos week after week - using the same approach I use with our Creator Tracker.
Tip 1: Set the Foundation
Before you dive into numbers, ask:
- What was the goal of this video? (Awareness, engagement, product promo?)
- What type of video was it? (Educational, story-time, tutorial, vibe-check?)
- What day/time did you post it?
Answering these gives you context - otherwise, you’re comparing apples to oranges, and just cause they both fruits don't mean they produce the same flavours, if you know what I mean!
Tip 2: Read the Right Metrics
Here’s how to decode your video performance (based on what I use, in the Moon Soldier Tracker):
Metric | What it tells you | What to aim for as a small creator |
---|---|---|
Views | Did people stop and watch it at all? | 700+ is solid |
Engagement per View | Is it sparking action (likes, saves, shares)? | 6%+ is strong |
Watch Efficiency | Are people staying for most of the video? | 15%+ is ideal |
Watch Time (secs) | Are you holding attention beyond the scroll? | 5–9 seconds+ is solid |
Saves & Shares | Is it valuable or relatable enough to revisit or share? | 5+ saves or shares |
New Followers | Is your content converting viewers into fans? | 2+ is a good signal |
If you're hitting at least 3 of these targets, you're on the right path. And I have placed small creator because the numbers are based on a smaller account, the bigger you are, the bigger you might want some of these numbers to be especially for views!
Tip 3: Ask Better Questions
Use this checklist to analyse what actually happened in the video:
- Did the hook stop someone scrolling? (First 1–2 sec = everything)
- Did you use text overlays or captions to support the message?
- Was it visually dynamic (movement, transitions, expressions)?
- Did the topic solve a real problem or curiosity your audience has?
- Did your caption or comments invite interaction?
- Could someone save this or share it with a friend?
Your goal: uncover what worked and what didn’t - so you can test intentionally next time and repeat the elements you have discovered might have worked.
Tip 4: Track Patterns, Not Perfection
One video isn’t the full story. Look across the week and month:
- Which formats get the most engagement (talking head, B-roll, screen-record)?
- What topics keep people watching the longest?
- Are your followers increasing on education posts or rants?
Once you see patterns, you can build momentum.
Tip 5: Take Action & Optimise
Here’s what to do next:
- Double down on your best performers (re-angle the same topic)
- Repurpose content formats that worked (turn a good video into a series)
- Tweak your weak spots - could the hook be sharper? Is the caption dry?
- Use your data to guide your strategy - not your feelings
And don’t forget - the TikTok Analytics Tracker is built to do this for you. It calculates all these scores automatically, so you can focus on creating, not crunching numbers.
Final Tip: Build in Public
Not every video needs to go viral. But every video can teach you something, you can grow whilst you're posting and that's okay.
Use this blog, your tracker, and our content formula to show up consistently, improve strategically, and grow confidently.
